23rd December 2009

Well its been a very busy past few month's down at DMR hence why the website is lacking updates.

First of all I would like to wish our reader's a Merry Christmas from the team at DMR, This years santa specials have been a huge success and we would like to thank all those who have supported the event. If you havent yet seen santa at his grotto there is still time to come down and see him ( please see the special events page for Details ).

Loco Status

Unfortuanly little progress has been made on the clayton and it is hoped that work will re-commence on the loco after the new year. Lady p's chimney has been fitted and painted all the loco requires now is a Boiler examination/test's and the loco will be back in use.

Signal Box

The DMR now has its very own signal box!! located near the eastern side of Riverside Halt, The signal box controls 1 set of points and 4 signal's. the signals are electronically controlled by switches on a track plan of the lower loop built and wired up by Stuart Cameron. The signals have been in use this Month and have proved to be very succesful in controlling the trains and will be a great addition to the railway for years to come.

Track work

During the cold months it is sometimes difficult to carry out essential maintanence on the track. Next year will see the sleeper replacment contine along with some sections of track raising up due to the constant trains passing over.

Online gallery

The DMR now has its own Fotopic gallery. However this has just been started and only a small amount of albums will be uploaded at current, Its hoped that we can get more collections created as soon as possible. A link can be found here:  http://dragonminiaturerailway.fotopic.net

3rd October 2009

Well its time for another update of the happenings down at Dooley lane.

Loco's and Stock

The " Clayton " is Progressing very well indeed, The front panel's have been placed and welded on, The buffer beam's have been placed on and painted and the cab is being fitted with controls and a ammeter and are being wired up to the battery, The loco is our first petrol hydraulic to feautre a ammeter. Unfortuanly there is still more work to do on this new loco before it is allowed to run. Lady p's small overhaul is nearly complete. New wheel's have been put on the pony truck and painted and the smokebox has been painted aswell, All that is left to do on this loco is a new chimney to be fitted and steam test's and the loco will be back in action.

Website

After receving some feedback on the photo's page I have decided to transfer the photo's to a online gallery. This will allow people to find pictures in Albums and will reduce the loading time for images. This will be changed as soon as possible and may result in the photo's page being taken offline for a while. I apologise for any inconvenience caused.

26th June 2009

Well it has been a long time since a update to the site has been made, alot has happend down at the railway over the year's and its time to get the site back up to date and people in the know of whats happening down at the railway.

Extension

If you have recently visited the railway you have probably noticed a new section of track after you come up from Riverside Halt, The new track will have a variety of new roles: one of which will be having santa trains using the extension in December, The grotto being a permant building and can act as a second tunnel or extra coach shed and a new locomotive pit ( boarded up when passanger trains are running over the line ) to make life easier for staff carrying out any maintence/refurbishment project's. Pictures to follow!

Loco's and Stock

Our Class 17 " Clayton " is coming along nicley and is now mechnically working with engine and hydrostat in place and fully linked up, it has even ran round a couple of times with driver's getting the feel of how the new loco responds and performs and so far no problem's have been found. The loco is progressing on nicley although there's still abit of work to do before it pull's its first train. Lady P is now out of use for a small overhaul whilst new rear wheels are fitted, new brake blocks and a new chimney its hoped that it can come back into revenue earning service as soon as possible, Princess will be used as the main steam loco.

Signal's

The Railway now has 3 new signal's on the line. The first one is at the main station, Station staff now have the role of train dispatch and can set either 1 or both ( 2 trains out on the loop at same time ) to green, if one train is out on the loop the signals cant be set to green until the token has been placed back onto the stand which will then allow the signal to be changed to green. The second signal is at Riverside Halt and is always set to green, this signal also has " Feather " lights so when the train is to pass through the loop these will iluminate to indicate to the driver that there going through the loop. The third and final signal is on the approach back to the main station this consist's of a orange aspect and 2 feather's to let the driver know which platfrom they are to arrive into.

Track Work

Some sections of the track have been relayed to ease off sharp corners for loco's and rolling stock. The main new layout is at the turntable area with 2 sidings rather than 1 so we can now store more loco's, carriges if required. The second section of track to be relaid is the Loop at Riverside Halt to elimante the double bend trains faced when leaving the station. More Track work has been carried out down the back section of the line after the tunnel to re - raise the track, and the track is going under a new sleeper replacement program carried out on none operating day's.

Website

The website now has a new contact address and has more DMR staff working it so question's/prompts can be awnsered more easily and faster. The Contact Details will be updated.

January 11th 2008

A belated Happy New Year to all readers of the latest happenings down at Dooley Lane. The last month has been quite busy with Santa Specials, maintenance and further work on ongoing projects. It will be useful once again to break the news report down into sectors for ease of reading.

Website.

Firstly, I hope you have noticed the new look on the website. I did this because I thought it would be more in keeping with the blood-and-custard theme employed at the railway proper. I hope you enjoy it as much as the previous format.

Locos and stock.

Princess is now being withdrawn pending her mechanical overhaul. Lady Pauline is now being used as the main steam service engine. Jack is back in service after receiving attention to the brakes which failed just before Christmas. Goliath has been performing well as a stand-in engine over the Christmas break, and is now back in storage until the Spring.

D1015 has been performing reliably, and has had the transmission tweaked to eliminate the lurching is was liable to do on odd moments. 47338 currently suffers from a weak spark when cold, so requires either a new engine or magneto/spark lead. It is hoped to solve this soon and bring the reliability of this engine back. David is now out of service after the exhaust valve blew on the engine, meaning that a new power unit is required for this locomotive. An 8hp Chinese Honda copy is being sourced and will be tested. It is hoped to bring this engine back into service soon, as the increased power will make it more suited to pull all three covered coaches; an asset during changeable weather. Andrew is still performing well, and is standing in for David where required, but the cast-iron driving wheels situated in front of the driver make this engine a last resort.

All three covered coaches are now in service and running well, and are popular with passengers. The new pair of sit-in coaches were put into service at the start of the Christmas holidays, and have seen use behind D1015, Goliath, David and Princess. They ride well and also appear popular with passengers. A third may be built in the future. Pictures of the new stock are available on the Rolling Stock page.

Santa Specials.

These were held throughout the month of December, and despite not being on as much as 2006, they were still considered a success and everyone enjoyed themselves. The position of the grotto down at Riverside Halt meant that the loop was used for service trains so that service trains could proceed whilst a Santa Special was in the grotto. Santa will return in 2008 to delight even more children.

Pictures of the Christmas break can be found on the Photo Gallery, and links to videos can be found on the DMR Videos page.

2008 projects.

Aside from the ongoing work on Princess, 47338 and David, plenty of things are planned for 2008. The trailing end of the passing loop at Riverside Halt will be altered to make the reverse curves approaching and through the point less tortuous, and also a steam loco water supply may be installed down there. The middle island platform at the main station will also be altered and a passing loop may be put around the outside of the line approaching the tunnel, so that Santa trains can be held outside the front of the tunnel while a service trains passes round the outside.

Stuart Cameron has had ideas about installing a signalling system, so a start may be made on this at some point during the year. Brian's Clayton will be arriving shortly for completion, so a new petrol-hydraulic locomotive will be joining the ranks. 25 inches wide and sporting a full cab, it will prove to be quite a machine, and its arrival is anticipated by all members of staff. We also plan more Galas and special events, so watch this space!!

December 5th 2007

The Christmas decorations are now up instead of the Hallowe'en ones, and Santa Specials started on Saturday. See Special Events page for more information. More videos have been uploaded, see Jon Barratt's YouTube page on the DMR Videos page for more.

The extra sit-in coaches are steadily progressing. It is hoped these may be in service for the Christmas school Holidays.

Running dates around the Christmas holidays will be posted as soon as possible.

A mini-gala will be held on the 15th and 16th of December. Jack and Goliath will be running on Saturday 15th, while Princess and Lady P will be running together on Sunday 16th. D1015 will be pulling the Santa Express on both days (all subject to availability and severity of weather).

November 5th 2007

Well, it's a while since my last report, and plenty has happened since. The third covered coach has been completed and is now in service - I MUST get some photos over Christmas. Brian has now started on a pair of carriages similar to the sitins, for use with Jack.

Once the coaches have been completed, Princess will be taken out of service after Christmas for a much-needed mechanical overhaul. Experiments have recently been made on Princess's grate to try and get her to hold steam better, but the increased burning temperature of the fuel has meant that grates are burned a lot quicker. Lady Pauline will take over main steam duties during the Spring. Before this happens, though, Lady Pauline requires some work on her regulator to allow more steam to pass through.

The original Tinkerbell celebrates her 40th birthday next May at the Moors Valley Railway, and we have been invited to take one (or both) of our Tinkerbell's. We shall wee what happens.

The Western (D1015) has been giving little trouble aside from continuing its habit of destroying air compressors and flattening batteries. Recently though it seems to have settled down. A new battery has been sourced and she is now back on top form. Daivd is seeing use with the colder weather, though her limited hauling capacity is not an advantage, and she is only used where it is quiet.

Hallowe'en Specials (a new event this year) was a great success, with a second spooky tunnel down at Riverside Halt, and many different scary things all round the railway. See here for a video taken: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=_4G0-_YyNYQ

Santa Specials will start towards the end of November. See the Special Events page for basic info: more info (dates) will be added soon (I promise). Goliath will be steamed a couple of times during hte Christmas holidays, as will Lady P.

Summer 2007 Work and running

Following on after my last report, Tara the Tram is now running reliably after inevitable teething trouble. It is certainly proving popular among the kids, who love gong up and down the short length of track. Where good weather and passenger attendance is recorded, it is not unknown for Tara to do 40+ rides throughout the day. All fencing is now in and painted cream. Also an overall shelter has been put up over Station Road Halt, providing protection during showers. This only now requires final signage to be attached for completion.

The other two tracks inside the green container have been laid and secured, and now provide storage for the scale slate wagons, and the third covered carriage. This coach has now had the roof supports fitted and shaped bulkheads cut.Only the roof requires fitting and then the top coats of maroon and black can be added before putting the coach in service. Once in service, room will be made for the delivery of the Clayton which Brian currently has under construction at home. Various other jobs were done, mainly track maintenance including weed-killing. It is hoped to have the third covered coach completed and in service, and the two chassis for the new sit-astride coaches to be complete by Christmas.

Goliath was in steam several times over the six-week holiday, once during the week, hauling two coaches in line with its braking power. On the August Bank Holiday, she was teamed up with Jack and ran double-headed with three coaches, providing an impressive sight and sound. Lady Pauline celebrated her 25th birthday on the same weekend, but not before she threw a keyway and suffered from slipping cranks the week before. D1015 performed well when its battery wasn't flat and had a working compressor. Andrew and David were used when weather dictated.

A new scene has been erected along the back straight featuring Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at their diamond mine. Another scene near the flower-pot train featuring the Teddy Bear's picnic is currently under construction.

Because of the atrocious weather Britain has seen over the last three months, general passenger numbers are down, but we have had some good days. The picnic area has been well-patronised on good days, and trains now generally pause there as a rule.

With little or no announcement, a gala was held over the August Bank Holiday weekend, with steam on all three days. Goliath and Jack wre in service on Saturday, with 47338 providing back-up. Pictures by a visitor can be found here: http://nick-tozer.fotopic.net/c1357472.html. Sunday was Princess, Lady P, with D1015 providing petrol haulage, and Monday was Goliath and Jack double-heading, Princess on the covered coaches, and 47338 as the petrol loco on duty.

A good six weeks was had: plenty of work was completed and lots of happy passengers conveyed. See DMR Pictures for a selection of photos taken over the summer. The Tara the Tram page shows updated progress on this project.
